The goal of their ‘folklore and photographic expeditions’, as they called them, was to document Southern life and culture. These thoughtful portraits depict agricultural workers in Kentucky and South Carolina. Ulmann was trained in the Pictorialist style, which promoted a painterly approach to photography through a range of soft tones. \r\n\nBromide prints\r\nMuseum nos.
