Features in long free hatches of brown and sanguine with some blue-grey, blue and black highlights in the eyes, on a pale creamy carnation ground; hair in long strokes of brown over a pale brown wash with some paler brown opaque heightening; cravat in a thick white wash, modelled with grey-brown over a pale brown wash; coat in brown wash, hatched in opaque grey for the lights and shaded in darker brown; background a sky and landscape, hatched and stippled in greys, blues, greens, with white and ochre; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book. \n\n<u>Frame:</u> Nineteenth-century electro-gilt imitation of the standard seventeenth-century type; the convex back overlapping the sides, which have a deep channel and rise to a plain bezel, which holds the flat glass by its bevelled edge; the hanger of tear-drop form and D-section, channelled down the middle and bifurcating as flat wire into two short reverse turns and diminishing spirals of four turns.
