The publishers, the Geographers' A–Z Map Company, had established such a reputation with their famous London A-Z that they decided to extend their range of maps to other significant British cities. \r\n\r\nArmed with this out-of-date Ordnance Survey map, staff at the Geographers' A–Z Map Company travelled to the area to see how suburban sprawl and wartime bombing had affected the local road layout. Their amendments can be seen here in red. The data was then taken back to the office and a new map drawn. Although maps are now revised using computers, the need for up-to-date information remains as critical as ever. The V&A has examples of original artwork from the Geographers' A–Z Map Company spanning 50 years in the company's history.","physicalDescription":"Printed map on paper handcoloured in green, red and yellow pencil and annotated extensively in red ink","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Geographers' A-Z Map Company Ltd","id":"C4144"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Handcoloured print on paper","categories":[{"text":"Printed pages & sheets","id":"THES48904"},{"text":"Maps","id":"THES252964"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AE2812"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"25","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1950s","earliest":"1950-01-01","latest":"1959-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Phyllis Pearsall MBE, FRGS","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"42.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"57.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'30'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Handwritten in blue pencil, top right"},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Road names and references handwritten throughout in pencil, red pencil and red ink"},{"content":"'ITEM 1'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Handwritten in ink on an adhesive address label, stuck on the right border"},{"content":"'Revision of 1931 with additions in 1938-9 & 1948. / PROVISIONAL EDITION. / YORKSHIRE [WEST RIDING] SHEET CCXXXII.
