Instructions for building these were given in photographic journals and handbooks. Often photographers who used such backdrops (including O.G. Rejlander, Julia Margaret Cameron and Lewis Carroll) trimmed or vignetted their prints to remove extraneous details, but Lady Hawarden has not done this. In form and in function, the booth recalls Emma Hamilton's 'attitudes' box.
