Here he stands up straight beside a battered nursing chair. The child-sized chair subtly scales the photograph down to the little boy's size so that he appears bigger and taller. The toy rifle he holds could be a reference to his subsequent Army career, perhaps planned when he was a boy. Cornwallis, who took his mother's maiden name, Fleeming, when he inherited Cumbernauld on her death, died aged 28 at the battle of Majuba Hill. It was Cornwallis' eldest daughter, Lady Clementina Tottenham, who inherited the family collection of Lady Hawarden's photographs and gave them to the Museum in about 1939. son to survive infancy.
