(and) 3 (?)107 x 89 mm PH 457-1968:474 Series 110 Literature: Microfilm: 3.19.455 This photograph and Ph 457-1968:386 (D.563) may be tableaux of children praying, a popular genre subject since the 18th century, as seen in the work of Greuze. Such scenes may be read as affirmations of bourgeois domestic virtues. Granted that the extent of Lady Hawarden's religious faith is not known, perhaps this and similar scenes should be accepted simply as variations on her theme of 'studies from life'.
