The function of the pierced bowl, however, has been debated by historians. It may have been used to remove tea leaves from tea after it had been served, hence the name 'strainer' or 'mote' (a speck of dust) spoon. Other writers have suggested that the pierced holes in the bowl were designed to separate unwanted dust from tea leaves as they were scooped out of the caddy.","physicalDescription":"Mote spoon, pierced bowl and pointed finial, from a tea set","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Smith, George III","id":"A8865"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2019ME4603","2019ME4604","2019ME4605"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"65 (VA)","id":"THES49734"},"free":"","case":"12","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"mote spoon","id":"AAT199908"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1774-1780","earliest":"1774-01-01","latest":"1780-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"approximate: maker George Smith III first registers his mark in Feburary 1774."}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"M.24:1-1945","id":"O104311"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"M.24A/1-1945","id":"O104793"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"M.24B/1-1945","id":"O104794"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"M.24D-1945","id":"O325267"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Given by Noel D.
