Such paintings were praised for their 'realism' in the late 1850s, and Lady Hawarden, like other contemporary artists and photographers, may have sought to emulate this quality. In Ph 457-1968:20 (D.131), bright sunlight through the window is reflected off the man's white apron, illluminating the unlit interior.
