Since tea for much of the 18th century was relatively expensive, the hostess refreshed the existing brew with hot water rather than making a fresh brew for each pot. It appears that by the latter part of the 18th century, a tea service was frequently purchased piecemeal. Faceted or fluted vessels, such as this hot-water pot, were popular on account of their classical associations.","physicalDescription":"Silver, vase shaped body with twelve wide flutings, circular foot, rising wooden handle, hinged lid with knop finial, reeded edges.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Peter and Ann Bateman","id":"A13850"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silver","id":"AAT11029"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"raising","id":"AAT237068"},{"text":"soldering","id":"AAT53949"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silver, raisied","categories":[{"text":"Containers","id":"THES48972"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Tea, Coffee & Chocolate wares","id":"THES48886"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2017JW5421"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"65 (VA)","id":"THES49734"},"free":"","case":"26","shelf":"4","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Hot water jug","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1793-1794","earliest":"1793-05-29","latest":"1794-05-28"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Miss M.B.
