He studied in the evenings at The Art Students League while supporting himself with day jobs. At around this time he met the Danish silversmith Per Smed and learned from him a love of metal. \"From this great craftsman I learned the beauty of metals, the feel of them in my hands, the excitement of fashioning them and the use of the special tools that bring them to life\". In 1954 he began to experiment with intaglio printmaking and translated his delight in metals into his creation of printing plates. He was one of the first artists to employ power tools in prinmaking - possibly as a result of a period of war work as a machinist in a factory.\r\n\r\n'Arrival' illustrates the wide vocabulary of different qualities and configurations of lines and textures that Childs was able to create through the intaglio printing process, from feather-like effects to searing lines. The lines of the abstract design recall, in a frenzied version, travel paths marked on a world map.","physicalDescription":"Colour power tool and hand burin engraving print on paper","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Childs, Bernard","id":"AUTH327730"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour power tool drypoint and burin engraving","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2164"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"181","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"prints","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":"Printed by the artist on his own press at 4, rue l'Université, Paris 7e, in December 1955."}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1955","earliest":"1955-01-01","latest":"1955-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"33.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"49.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"plate","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"50.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"64.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Childs 55","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Signature and date, in pencil."},{"content":"epreuve d'essai pour \"Arrival\"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In pencil"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Arrival', colour power-tool drypoint and burin engraving by Bernard Childs, 1955","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Taken from Departmental Circulation Register 1959"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.14-1959"],"accessionNumberNum":"14","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1959,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"Trial proof","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-11-24","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
