It was put up in two campaigns, the first beginning with Inigo Jones's appointment as Surveyor of the King's Works in 1615, immediately after his return from Italy. The house was completed in 1638, transforming the earlier immature design into the startlingly classical building we see today. Inigo Jones aimed to get back to the spirit of the antique without slavishly copying Palladio but by studying classical architecture directly as Palladio had done. Campbell's print of the park side reinforces the pure geometry of the design by eliminating the window frames; in Jones's day each would have been divided by a heavy cross-shaped stone mullion.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["CIRC.83-1967"],"accessionNumberNum":"83","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1967,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-10-31","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
