This print shows the 'new stone\r\nbuilding' facing the river, which was added in\r\n1662, when the palace was refurbished for \r\nthe Queen Mother Henrietta Maria. Its design\r\nwas based on arcaded Italian palazzi as well as\r\nInigo Jones's famous arcades at Covent\r\nGarden. As a model for eighteenth century\r\ntown architecture the great gallery was of\r\nimmense significance, not only for terraces\r\nbut also individual town houses.
