Campbell\r\ndeliberately put this print of it near the start\r\nof <i>Vitruvius Britannicus</i>, just after the prints\r\nof Inigo Jones's and John Webb's buildings\r\n(also shown in this exhibition). He evidently \r\nintended to present the house as an exemplar\r\nof what new architecture should be, that is\r\nneo-Palladian. Espcially important were the\r\nhorizontal emphasis and detail of the facade\r\nand the columned portico, matched inside by\r\na temple-like saloon of the same dimensions.\r\nWhen built, the block was made shorter, and \r\nlower symmetrical wings added. Close to\r\nLondon, Wanstead quickly became a goal for \r\nsightseers and its design was soon being \r\nimitated all over England. It was demolished\r\nin 1824, althought the park survives.\r\n\r\nCirc.86-1967","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["CIRC.86-1967"],"accessionNumberNum":"86","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1967,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-03-31","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
