It was the perfect example of the 'temple front' house, formed by adding a pedimented temple portico to a domestic block. This revolutionary idea had originally come from Palladio, but Webb was also following Inigo Jones's Prince's Lodging at Newmarket of 1619, the first building of this type in Britain. Amesbury, built about 1659, inspired the first house of the neo-Palladian movement, William Benson's villa called Wilbury, of about 1708.
