He was part of the 'Blaue Reiter' Group which included Vasily Kandinsky, Franze Marc and August Macke. He exhibited with the group in the first exhibition of 'Der Blaue Reiter' in 1911-12. Campendonk experimented with various modern styles of his day and exhibited with Expressionist artists. His first graphic works were published in 1912.\r\n\r\nAfter World Ward One sources such as African art, Egyptian shadow play figures and Russian folk prints all provided sources of inspiration for his woodcuts. This print dates to that period. It is hand coloured with watercolour and the contrast of the almost luminous colours and black outlines seem to relate to Campendon's interest in stained glass.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Campendonk, Heinrich","id":"AUTH351145"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"woodcut","id":"AAT53296"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Woodcut","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AG2346"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"MP","shelf":"181","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"prints","id":"AAT41273"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1921","earliest":"1921-01-01","latest":"1921-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"13 5/8","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"1964","earliest":"1964-01-01","latest":"1964-12-31"},"part":"","note":"Taken from Departmental Circulation Register 1964"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"10 5/8","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"1964","earliest":"1964-01-01","latest":"1964-12-31"},"part":"","note":"Taken from Departmental Circulation Register 1964"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Grosser Kopf mit Gespreizter Hand', woodcut by Heinrich Campendonk, 1921","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Taken from Departmental Circulation Register 1964"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["CIRC.108-1964"],"accessionNumberNum":"108","accessionNumberPrefix":"CIRC","accessionYear":1964,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-15","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
