He subsequently went to Paris, studying at the Academie Colarossi, and until 1940 he lived mainly in the South of France. Hillier's work shows the influence of the Surrealists. In his enigmatic compositions incongruous objects are often juxtaposed, and an atmosphere of dreamlike strangeness is evoked.
