He was a founder of the art journal \"Die Bruke\" which aimed to produce 'vital art' that renounced tradition. From around 1909 he was instrumental in reviving the woodcut as a powerfully expressive medium. After its European heyday in the 15th and 16th centuries the woodcut had been mainy used for raw, popular prints. This heritage of direct simple lines and communication to the masses appealed to the philsophy of the Expressionist artists who took up the wood cut.\r\n\r\nIn this print Karl Schmidt-Rotluff has used black line and white line technique to great effect. He has intensified the woman's expression by exploiting the jagged edges of his black lines together with the dramatic contrast provided by the white lines.
