'The Wooden Bridge', after Sir Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1844) is one of three that Bentley produced for the Vernon Collections. Sir Robert Vernon gave the original oil painting (ca 1835) to the National Gallery in 1847; it is now in Tate Britain. It is interesting to compare Bentley's print with another version of the same subject, an etching by L. Gaucherel, which is already in the Collection (E.91-1894).\r\n\r\nJ.C. Bentley is a well-known engraver who studied under Brandard, and exhibited at the British Institution (1833-51) and at the Royal Academy (1846-52).","physicalDescription":"'The Wooden Bridge' after Sir Augustus Wall Callcott RA, print of bridge and surrounding landscape; in sound condition.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bentley, Joseph Clayton","id":"A13485"},"association":{"text":"engraver","id":"AAT25165"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Callcott, Augustus Wall (Sir, RA)","id":"A8212"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"etching","id":"AAT53241"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"etching on paper","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"EL","shelf":"50","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1840-1851","earliest":"1835-01-01","latest":"1851-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by P. and J.
