This had a considerable effect on dance as it gave the female body equal freedom with the male dancer, who had been unencumbered with pannier and high wig for some years. In outlining breast and leg, the print leaves no doubt where the appeal of the new fashions lay.","physicalDescription":"Two female dancers dressed in classically inspired dresses, with high waists, short sleeves and wide V collared necks. The dancer on the left steps on tip-toe from her right to her left foot; her head is in profile and looking down and her right arm is bent over her head, with the left down, both hands holding the hands of the second dancer. The dancer to the right stands with her back to the viewer, stepping on tip-toe from her right to her left foot; her head is in profile and she has a blue ribbon tied around her neck; her left arm is raised, and her right arm crosses her body in front to hold her partner's hands. Both dancers have curled hair in the classical style, bound with scarves. The dress of the left-hand dancer is tinted pale blue with belt and shoes tinted pink; the dress of the other dancer is tinted pink with scarf, belt, shoes and stockings tinted blue.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Buck, Adam","id":"A9771"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Bovi, Mariano","id":"A13446"},"association":{"text":"engravers (printmakers)","id":"AAT25165"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Bovi, Mariano","id":"A13446"},"association":{"text":"publisher","id":"x32600"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Printing ink","id":"AAT187371"},{"text":"Watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"Paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Stipple engraving","id":"AAT53239"},{"text":"Hand colouring","id":"AAT133555"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stipple engraving with some hand colouring","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2006AE7998"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356644"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"print","id":"AAT41273"}],[{"text":"Stipple engraving","id":"AAT41364"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"02/05/1796","earliest":"1796-05-02","latest":"1796-05-02"},"association":{"text":"published","id":"x30682"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Dame Marie Rambert","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"403","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"right hand side","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"313","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"lower edge","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"edges irregular","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'DRAWING BY ADAM BUCK'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"The print is part of the collection of dance prints amassed by Marie Rambert and her husband, Ashley Dukes in the first half of the 20th century. Eventually numbering 145 items, some of which had belonged to the ballerina Anna Pavlova, it was one of the first and most important specialist collections in private hands. \r\nRambert bought the first print as a wedding present but could not bear to give it away. As the collection grew, it was displayed in the bar of the Mercury Theatre, the headquarters of Ballet Rambert, but in 1968, Rambert gave the collection to the Victoria and Albert Museum; seven duplicates were returned to Rambert, but these are catalogued in Ivor Guest's A Gallery of Romantic Ballet, which was published before the collection came to the V&A. Although often referred to as a collection of Romantic Ballet prints, there are also important engravings of 17th and 18th century performers, as well as lithographs from the later 19th century, by which time the great days of the ballet in London and Paris were over.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Two Sisters.
