It is distantly reminiscent of the work of Johann Michael Maucher (1645-after 1690), and at the same time recalls Japanese ivories. This mixture of sources, as well as the coarse carving, suggests it is in fact a nineteenth-century fake, probably made in Germany. It was formerly thought to be from about \r\n1680-1720.\r\nTwo other ivory handles for hunting swords are in the V&A, one carved with groups of figures terminating in the head of a man wearing a helmet (2236-1855), the other formed of groups of superimposed animals (9039-1863).\n","physicalDescription":"Carved ivory handle of a hunting knife with a grotesque horned head below which is a medallion with a ram's skull in relief.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ivory","id":"AAT11857"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved ivory","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Sport","id":"THES48893"},{"text":"Tools & Equipment","id":"THES48883"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AD1004","2006AD1061"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES395355"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Handle","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Germany","id":"x28873"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1680-1720","earliest":"1680-01-01","latest":"1720-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"12.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Acquired from the Museo Collegio Romano, Rome in 1859.","historicalContext":"Two other ivory handles for hunting swords are in the V&A, one carved with groups of figures terminating in the head of a man wearing a helmet (2236-1855), the other formed of groups of superimposed animals (9039-1863)","briefDescription":"Handle of a hunting knife, ivory, carved with a grotesque horned head, probably Germany, ca. 1840-1850","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects Acquired in the Year 1859. <u>In</u>: <u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, Arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
