It was pricked with holes along the contours of the Virgin's face, and then 'pounced' with coloured powder. This transferred the design to another ground below, ready for painting. The relative scantness of the shading between the delicate contours is explained by this process, which only allows principle lines to be feasibly transferred and mars the ground, rendering much further 'finish' pointless.","physicalDescription":"Head of a woman, possibly depicting the Virgin Mary; Black chalk, pricked for transfer.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Oggiono, Marco d'","id":"A28725"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Raphael","id":"A5306"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":"previously ascribed to"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"black chalk","id":"AAT80058"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT54196"},{"text":"pricking","id":"AAT101943"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Black chalk, pricked for transfer","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2010EF7187","2006BH8457","2017KE2338"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH (VA)","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"DG","shelf":"15","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":"AAT33973"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":"possibly"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"early 16th century","earliest":"1500-01-01","latest":"1524-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Rev.
