This is one of eight adjoining preparatory drawings made for a vast <i>Panorama of Paris from the Seine</i>, which was exhibited in London from 1803 to 1805. In order to achieve the precision of topographical drawing required, for this drawing the panorama-painter Henry Aston Barker almost certainly used a <i>camera obscura</i> – an optical device which projects an image of the scene onto the paper.
