They originated in the 1440s with the desire to reproduce coins and hardstone engravings from ancient Greece and Rome. Some were made as collector’s pieces, to be viewed and displayed in private, and others for practical purposes. They also inspired designs in other media, from architecture to bookbindings. This frequently encountered plaquette shows Ganymede swept into the heavens by Jupiter in the guise of an eagle. It is taken from a lost rock crystal engraving that Bernardi produced for Cardinal Ippolito de’ Medici. He adapted the composition from a drawing that Michelangelo made in the winter of 1532.","physicalDescription":"Elliptical bronze plaque depicting the Rape of Ganymede, probably moulded from an engraved crystal","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bernardi, Giovanni Desiderio","id":"A11451"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Michelangelo","id":"A3843"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":"after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Gender and Sexuality","id":"THES48940"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006BB2687","2017KD0013"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"62 (VA)","id":"THES49739"},"free":"","case":"CA7","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Plaquette","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rome","id":"x29106"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1540","earliest":"1535-01-01","latest":"1544-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"6.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"9.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"0.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"0.08","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measured for the Medieval and Renaissance Galleries","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Formerly in the Gherardini Collection of artists’ terracotta and wax models Acquired in 1854","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Elliptical bronze plaque depicting the Rape of Ganymede, probably moulded from an engraved crystal, after a design by Michelangelo, by Giovanni Bernardi, Italy, 16th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects Acquired in the Year 1854. <u>In</u>: <u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, Arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
