The symbol on the arm that cradles the fallen figure is that of the Comintern (the Third International), founded in Moscow in 1919 in the early years of Bolshevik rule.  The artist Subirats belonged to the Syndicate of Professional Designers (SDP), a pro-Republican group of graphic designers.
