It appeared to be a study for the leg of the marble statue of David (1501-3) in the Accademia at Florence.\r\n\r\nPrice Amerson Jr. attributes it to Cigoli or after Cigoli.\r\n\r\nThis model and the related 4 museum numbers have been extensively discussed in the literature of Michelangelo.\r\n\r\nThe French word écorché literally means flayed or skinned. It has been adopted almost universally by scholars when speaking of a human figure stripped of its skin and thus displaying the superficial layers of muscles. Sculpted models or statuettes in which the muscles of the body are revealed (or écorchés) first appeared in sixteenth century Europe, and in Italy primarily.","physicalDescription":"Red wax model of a left leg ecorché, an anatomical study, showing the leg cut off at the groin with the heel slightly raised.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Cigoli, Ludovico","id":"A12455"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"AAT25181"},"note":"possibly"},{"name":{"text":"Cigoli, Ludovico","id":"A12455"},"association":{"text":"sculptor","id":"AAT25181"},"note":"possibly after"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wax","id":"AAT14585"}],"techniques":[{"text":"modelled","id":"x30779"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Reddish wax kneaded with tow","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006BB2411"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES395977"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Sketch model","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Florence","id":"x28848"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"late 16th century","earliest":"1550-01-01","latest":"1600-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"4109-1854","id":"O102703"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"4110-1854","id":"O102706"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"4112-1854","id":"O102708"},"association":"Object"},{"object":{"text":"4113-1854","id":"O102712"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"9.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Formerly in the Gherardini Collection of artists’ terracotta and wax models Acquired in 1854","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Red wax model of a left leg ecorché, an anatomical study, possibly by or after Cigoli, Italy (Florence), 16th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects Acquired in the Year 1854. <u>In</u>: <u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, Arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
