Her method is informed by a German documentary tradition in which multiple examples of a subject are interrogated through a 'deadpan' presentation and constant viewpoint. However, her observations on how cultivation changes the face of the land give her photographs a distinctive presence and individuality. Nieweg was a student of Bernd and Hilla Becher and was associated with other members of the Dusseldorf School of Photography, of which the Museum has multiple examples of work. It also forms interesting links with the culture of gardening and representations of urban agricultural landscapes.","physicalDescription":"Photograph of cabbages in plot.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Nieweg, Simone","id":"A13334"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"C-type print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"B","id":"THES384972"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Düsseldorf (region)","id":"x36902"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1990","earliest":"1990-01-01","latest":"1990-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the American Friends of the V&A, through the generosity of Dr John Knaus","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"55.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Print","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"81.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Print","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"56.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Frame","note":"Measurement of object when framed"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"81.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Frame","note":"Measurement of object when framed - frame does not exceed width of print"},{"dimension":"Height","value":"500","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Height of grid ","note":"Size of grid when all 18 photographs in the series are displayed together"},{"dimension":"Width","value":"784","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"Width of grid","note":"Size of grid when all 18 photographs in the series are displayed together"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph by Simone Nieweg, 'Kohlfeld, Düsseldorf-Niederkassel', 1990, C-type print","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Simone Nieweg is engaged in an ongoing project that records allotments, fields and forests around the cities of Bielefeld and Düsseldorf.
