Coles Phillips. Playing with negative space, he often drew characters to have a part or most of their clothing the same colour as the background, leaving the eye to fill in the detail. His first in this style appeared on the cover of Life magazine (#1321) in 1908 and was so popular, they commissioned over 50 more over the next four years. Doubly successful from the magazine's point of view, the fadeaway required considerably less ink and a minimised colour palette. It was cheaper to print and yet highly effective as an eye-catching 'trompe l'oeil' device.  Cole Phillips was a savvy businessman as one of the first commercial illustrators to insist that his name appear printed on all his work, from advertising posters to book and magazine covers.
