The costumier Paddy Dickie made the costume, with head-dress and hat-maker John Brooking making the hat - and his mother making the pom-pom.\r\n\r\nMany dame costumes are sight gag costumes, signalling something about the character but also creating laughter by their clever design or simply being over-the-top. This smart (for a dame) costume is in the style of a sailor suit in the British colours of red, white and blue; under the crisp white pleated skirt are worn traditional dame bloomers, in a stylish red with white spots. The outfit is crowned with the blonde curly wig, fixed to the smart sailor cap. Worn by someone as expert as Billy Dainty, it could get a laugh on its own. However, the real joke is delayed; Sarah the Cook is caught in the storm at sea and the destruction wrought upon this smart outfit (see S.288-1989) creates another, bigger, laugh.\r\n\r\nBilly Dainty was one of the last dames to have his own costumes - today most costumes are provided by the production management. John Brooking remembers him having the ideas for his costumes that he discussed with Paddy and she executed, sometimes without an intermediate designer.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dickie, Paddy","id":"A20813"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"Paddy Dickie made the costume, but John Brooking made the hat"},{"name":{"text":"Brooking, John","id":"A12544"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":"John Brooking made the hat for the costume made by Paddy Dickie"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"machine stitching","id":"x29587"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Pantomime","id":"THES266218"},{"text":"Theatre costume","id":"THES268477"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2009BY1341","2014HA3446","2014HA3447","2014HA3448","2014HA3449","2014HA3458","2014HA3461","2014HA3462","2014HA3463","2014HA3464","2014HA3465","2014HA3466","2014HA3467","2014HA3468","2014HA3469","2014HA3470","2014HA3471","2014HA3485","2014HA3491","2014HA3492","2014HA3493","2014HA3494","2014HA3495","2014HA3496","2014HA3497","2014HA3498","2014HA3499","2014HA3500","2014HA3501","2014HA3502","2014HA3503","2014HA3504","2014HA3505","2014HA3506"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES366599"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES366599"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"018","id":"THES308921"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES366599"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Pantomime costumes","id":"THES414573"}],[{"text":"Tunic","id":""}],[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Pantomime costumes","id":"THES414573"}],[{"text":"Tights","id":""}],[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Pantomime costumes","id":"THES414573"}],[{"text":"Hats","id":"AAT46106"}],[{"text":"Theatre costume","id":""}],[{"text":"Pantomime costumes","id":"THES414573"}],[{"text":"Bloomers","id":"AAT210537"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Oxford","id":"x31203"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1984","earliest":"1979-01-01","latest":"1988-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Billy Dainty and Laurence Dainty","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"190","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"75","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"60","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Measurements include the whole costume (including hat) as mounted on a mannequin, and are approximate.
