Its initial purpose was the patrolling of black ghettos to protect residents from police brutality. The carrying of guns was integral to this policy of self-defence and symbolic of it. The Party also urged the black community to be self-reliant and advocated the teaching of Black History. Emory Douglas (the Panther's Minister for Culture) fuses these principles in this poster. The revolutionary student wears non-American dress and carries a Black Studies book along with the trademark firearm.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Douglas, Emory","id":"A13081"},"association":{"text":"Artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"The Black Panther Party of Connecticut","id":"A13235"},"association":{"text":"publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Propaganda","id":"THES48902"},{"text":"Global Africa","id":"THES413895"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BU0701"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MB2E","shelf":"LS","box":"4"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of the American Friends of the V&A; Gift to the American Friends by Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"355","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"216","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"\"Revolutionary Black Student Conference\" photocopied flyer.
