Ralph Allen was an entrepreneur, philanthropist and was notable for his reforms to the British postal system. His home, Prior Park, a Palladian house, was built to demonstrate the properties of Bath stone as a building material. On the crest of Bathwick Hill facing the city of Bath is the folly known as “Ralph Allen’s Sham Castle”, built in 1755. Richard Guyatt’s poster is a dramatic modernist view of this landmark, emphasising its’ theatrical character and framing it with the swooping lines of the walls running up and over the hill. Richard Guyatt was an influential British designer; he worked for several important British companies and also designed coins and postage stamps. From 1978-81 he was the Rector of the Royal College of Art.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Guyatt","id":"A18544"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Shell Mex","id":"A31205"},"association":{"text":"issued by","id":"x36339"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"none","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"3G","shelf":"DR8","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1936","earliest":"1936-01-01","latest":"1936-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of the American Friends of the V&A; Gift to the American Friends by Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"73.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"114.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"\"To Visit Britain's Landmarks You Can Be sure of Shell.
