Their full names are Marie Taglioni, Lise Noblet, Pauline Montessu, Amélie Legallois and Alexis Dupont; information about Julia remains elusive. Of the six dancers, Marie Taglioni and Lise Noblet went on to international fame. \r\nThe dancers all wear the elaborate hair styles of the early 1830s; such styles were not practical on stage and it was not surprising that dancers eventually adopted the more severe mid-Victorian style, with the centre parting, the hair sleeked down either side of the head and pulled into a bun or plaits at the back or plaited around the ears. This style was so practical for dancers that it outlived the fashion and became the 'uniform' for ballet dancers everywhere.","physicalDescription":"Half-length portraits of six female figures, arranged in two rows with the central figure slightly raised. They wear the fashions of the early 1830s, with elaborately arranged hair styles and broad belts to their high-waisted, low-necked dresses. Beneath is a motif of a lyre, a butterfly, laurel wreath and a Punch figure.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Llanta","id":"A13287"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Lemercier","id":"A16656"},"association":{"text":"lithographer","id":"AAT25175"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Lithographic ink","id":"AAT187750"},{"text":"Paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"Card","id":"x30344"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Lithography","id":"AAT53271"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lithograph mounted on card","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2006AE8045"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES356644"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Print","id":""}],[{"text":"Lithograph","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"France","id":"x28849"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1832","earliest":"1832-01-01","latest":"1832-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed and published","id":"x35383"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Lady Mary Evans","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"441","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"at centre","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"338","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"lower edge","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Domed upper edge","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Les Artistes Contemporaines. / 1.
