D. Llewelyn learned of the calotype, or paper negative, photographic process directly from its inventor, his cousin-in-law, William Henry Fox Talbot. He became one of the most important amateur photographers and an inventor of new techniques. \r\n\r\nOne of his innovations was a camera shutter that allowed him to capture movement at approximately 1/25th of a second. This photograph showing members of his family was probably taken on their estate at Penllergare, Wales.","physicalDescription":"Photograph of two little girls in Victorian dress, one leading the other on the back of a donkey.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dillwyn Llewelyn, John","id":"A6438"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"AAT25687"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Salted paper print from glass negative","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AV4755"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"1","box":"A"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Wales","id":"x29337"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1853","earliest":"1853-01-01","latest":"1853-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased 1984","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Elinor and her Donkey or The Donkey Party', photograph by John Dillwyn Llewelyn (1810-82), Wales, 1853","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.142-1984"],"accessionNumberNum":"142","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":1984,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-15","recordCreationDate":"2004-08-13","availableToBook":false}}
