For a time this man, Buyanquli Khan, was the puppet ruler of parts of Central Asia, but in 1358, when he tried to assert his own authority, he was assassinated by a local warlord.\r\n\r\nBuyanquli's tomb was built in a cemetery on the outskirts of Bukhara. The entire building was covered in tiles, inside and out. \r\n\r\nThe tiles were deeply carved with inscriptions and other ornament, and covered with coloured glazes before the final firing. This impressive technique was used in Central Asia only for a brief period, from around 1350 to the early 15th century.\r\n\r\nThese tiles were originally set at the left end of the main façade of the tomb.","physicalDescription":"Panel with three large arabesque spirals in relief","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carved earthenware under coloured glazes","categories":[{"text":"Tiles","id":"THES48884"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MES","id":"THES48607"},"images":["2006BH6027","2017KK8226"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"42 (VA)","id":"THES49806"},"free":"","case":"WW9","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Panel","id":""}],[{"text":"Panel","id":""}],[{"text":"Panel","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Bukhara","id":"x35893"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1359","earliest":"1354-01-01","latest":"1363-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"125","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"50.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Weight","value":"32","unit":"kg","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Taken from the facade of the tomb of Buyanquli Khan in Bukhara.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Fragment of vertical panel from the tomb of Buyanquli Khan, Uzbekistan (Bukhara), about 1358","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Claus-Peter Haase, \"Buyan Quli Chan - Baudekor,\" <i>Damaszener Mitteilungen</i> 11 (1999): 205-25."}],"production":"From the tomb of Buyanquli Khan in Bukhara (modern Uzbekistan).","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"arabesques","id":"AAT10206"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Jameel Gallery \n\n1-13 Tiles from the Tomb of Buyanquli Khan\r\nUzbekistan, Bukhara\r\nAbout 1358 \r\n\r\n8 Fragment of Vertical Panel\r\nFrom left end of main façade\r\nCarved earthenware under coloured glaze\r\nMuseum no. 574 to B-1900\r\n","date":{"text":"Jameel Gallery","earliest":"2006-07-20","latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["574B-1900","574A-1900","574-1900"],"accessionNumberNum":"574","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":1900,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Panel [1]","Panel [2]","Panel [3]"],"assets":["2019LR2292","2019LP5539","2019LR6349","2019LR5616","2019LR3736","2019LU9031","2019LU1335","2019LW7151"],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2004-08-09","availableToBook":false}}
