He worked from c. 1555–83 and found increasing success in Augsburg, Nuremberg, and finally in Prague at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor, Rudolf II, alongside many other Flemish, German, and Italian artists. Although his work was in keeping with his contemporaries, Hornick’s work was among the most adventurous of the Mannerist style. \r\n\r\nThese 276 drawings, mostly just in pen, ink and wash, are mostly attributed to Hornick and his coterie, though some have been identified as the work of the famed goldsmith Wenzel Jamnitzer (1507/08–1585) and others as copies of the work of Italian painter Francesco Salviati (1510–63).","physicalDescription":"Seven designs decorated with arabesques and strapwork. These two designs are identical to a fork and a spoon design located in the Bavarian National Library (possibly from Hornick's Augsburg period) and are illustrated in Hackenbroch's article in Connoisseur 1968. She is inclined to attribute this sheet to Erasmus Hornick. She did not mention the parallel to the V&A sheet. Hackenbroch also illustrated in the same article a toothpick pendant (in the Waddesdon Bequest in the British Museum) which is close to one of the toothpick designs on the V&A sheet.
