The OSPAAAL posters in particular reveal the idealistic spirit at the core of the Cuban Revolution, intent on eradicating imperialism globally.\r\n\r\nMozambique came under Portuguese control in the 16th century. The land was exploited for its natural resources of gold and ivory. In 1885, it was established as a formal colony called Portuguese East Africa. Beginning in the 1950s, native peoples began to protest their colonial status. From 1961 and lasting more than a decade, Frelimo (Front for the Liberation of Mozambique) rebels fought a guerrilla war. In 1974 - four years after this poster was made - Portugal officially agreed to support Mozambique's independence. The country was declared independent on 25 June, 1975.\r\n\r\nPortugal is here represented as a linked chain broken by Mozambique. Chain links are a common design element in OSPAAAL's solidarity posters, featuring also in graphics supporting Bissau & Cape Verde, Namibia, South Africa, Haiti and Korea.","physicalDescription":"Stylised black lettering spelling out 'Mozambique', arrowheads protruding from 'M' and 'z', breaking through chains","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Martínez, Olivio","id":"A13226"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"OSPAAAL (the Organization in Solidarity with the People of Africa, Asia and Latin America)","id":"A13223"},"association":{"text":"printers","id":"AAT25732"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"OSPAAAL (the Organization in Solidarity with the People of Africa, Asia and Latin America)","id":"A13223"},"association":{"text":"publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"offset lithography","id":"AAT192900"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Offset lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Africa","id":"THES49019"},{"text":"Propaganda","id":"THES48902"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Caribbean","id":"THES286921"},{"text":"Global Africa","id":"THES413895"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2015HJ5219","2012FL6220"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Cuba","id":"x30039"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1970","earliest":"1970-01-01","latest":"1970-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of the American Friends of the V&A; Gift to the American Friends by Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"53.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"33.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"September 25","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Day of Solidarity with the people's struggle in Mozambique"}],"objectHistory":"The V&A holds a significant group of approximately 200 OSPAAAL posters.
