Born into a Jewish family in Frankfurt, she initially pursued an academic career before moving to Paris in 1930 to concentrate on photography.\r\n\r\nIn Paris Bing established herself as a freelance photographer, applying elements of her oblique, sober, experimental style to commercial photography, including photojournalism, architectural and theatrical photography, advertising, fashion and portraiture. In her portraits from the mid 1930s Bing concentrates on photographic form – contrasts of light and dark and basic mechanical geometries.
