About 1780\r\nPen and ink and watercolour with pencil additions\r\n\r\nGeorge Dance junior was best known for his public and street architecture in London, carried out as Clerk of the City Works. In this unexecuted project for a small public building he takes a neo-Palladian villa design on a rusticated base and modernises it by adding shallow neo-classical Ionic pilasters, highly simplified window surrounds and low relief sculptural panels. As in the architecture of Robert Adam, the whole effect is of a gentle backwards and forwards movement, markedly different from the clearly seperated volumes of neo-Palladianism. The sketched-in shallow dome at the top adds an even stronger neo-classical note. This carefully washed-in ink presentation drawing has many rough pencil alterations, perhaps as a result of comments from the client.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}}],"partNumbers":["3336"],"accessionNumberNum":"3336","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-05-02","recordCreationDate":"2009-06-30","availableToBook":false}}
