Each medal is formed mechanically by the force of two engraved metal dies pressing the image on to a blank disc of softer metal held between them. Struck medals are generally designed in low relief and have crisp, sharp outlines. By the 1850s artists who were not skilled die engravers could use a reducing machine to design medals. A durable copy of their plaster model, like the present piece, was fixed to the reducing machine. This scanned the model and simultaneously cut a steel die on a reduced scale.","physicalDescription":"Circular roundel model (with frame) depicting, in low relief, an allegorical scene of a female figure representing Britannia crowning two others representing Industry and Commerce.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Bonnardel, Pierre-Antoine Hippolyte","id":"A13217"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"plaster","id":"AAT14922"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Plaster, moulded","categories":[{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"},{"text":"Great Exhibition","id":"THES48945"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006BJ4914"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"111 (VA)","id":"THES49918"},"free":"","case":"DU2","shelf":"DR12","box":"1"},{"current":{"text":"019","id":"THES395342"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Model","id":""}],[{"text":"Frame","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1851","earliest":"1851-01-01","latest":"1851-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"22.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Previously unregistered object (Lost 645) held in Section","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Model, moulded plaster, for the reverse of 1851 Exhibition Council Medal, by Pierre Antoine Hippolyte Bonnardel, France, 1851","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Trusted, Marjorie, ed. <u>The Making of Sculpture.
