He helped establish the Black Panther Party for Self Defense in Oakland, California in 1966, becoming the organisation's Minister of Information - its spokesman. He held many revolutionary and controversial views which he published in a book of essays titled 'Soul on Ice' in 1968. In the same year, he ran for President on the Peace & Freedom ticket. This poster advertises an event in New York to hear the candidate speak. At the time, his political platform would have been leftist and anti-establishment. After troubles with the law in 1968, Cleaver fled the U.S. He returned in 1975, and to the shock of many, renounced his Panther affiliation and many of his radical beliefs. Though unsuccessful, he even ran for the California Senate as a Republican. Looking back on Cleaver's life, this poster marks an important moment from which he would later distance himself.","physicalDescription":"Orange poster with black printed text, portrait of Eldridge Cleaver's face in the upper right.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Peace & Freedom Party (*this information applies only to the year 1968)","id":"A13211"},"association":{"text":"publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Paper and ink","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Propaganda","id":"THES48902"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MB2E","shelf":"LS","box":"2"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1968","earliest":"1968-01-01","latest":"1968-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of the American Friends of the V&A; Gift to the American Friends by Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"21.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"27.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"See/ &/ hear/ Eldridge/ Cleaver/ PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE OF THE PEACE & FREEDOM PARTY/ MINISTER OF INFORMATION OF THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY/ AUTHOR OF SOUL ON ICE/ Additional speakers including: JUDITH MAGE Peace & Freedom Party Vice Pres. cand./ ENTERTAINMENT/ MANHATTAN CENTER - 311 WEST 34th STREET/ THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17th - 8 P.M./ Tickets:/ RESERVED: $10 - $5 - $2.50/ Tickets available in advance through the/ PEACE AND FREEDOM PARTY/ 682 Sixth Ave. N.Y.C. 691-3180/ Village Chelsea Peace & Freedom 4-6 Bethune Ct.
