' etc. and inscribed below in a later, clearer hand with a transcription of the above. Inscribed again by the artist (but illegibly) beneath the grotesque ornament \r\nPen and ink \r\n16 ½ x 10 ¼  (419 x 260) \t\t\t4902 \r\nPROVENANCE J. Richardson, Jr (Lugt 2170); Dr H. Wellesley (sale, Sotheby, 25 June to 10 July 1866, unidentified lot, bought for the Museum)\r\n\n\nThe caryatid is one of the four in the corners of the vault of the Stanza dell'Incendio. For an illustration see N. Pevsner and S. Lang, 'The Egyptian Revival' in <i>The Architectural Review</i>, 119, 1956, p. 247, fig. 24. As Pevsner and Lang point out, Raphael's design was probably inspired by the two Egyptian caryatids which stood at the portal of the Episcopal Palace at Tivoli (see <i>op. cit</i>., p. 247, fig. 22, and p. 246).
