He worked from c. 1555–83 and found increasing success in Augsburg, Nuremberg, and finally in Prague at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor, Rudolf II, alongside many other Flemish, German, and Italian artists. Although his work was in keeping with his contemporaries, Hornick’s work was among the most adventurous of the Mannerist style. \r\n\r\nThese 276 drawings, mostly just in pen, ink and wash, are mostly attributed to Hornick and his coterie, though some have been identified as the work of the famed goldsmith Wenzel Jamnitzer (1507/08–1585) and others as copies of the work of Italian painter Francesco Salviati (1510–63).","physicalDescription":"Enriched with bands of crabs, dolphins and other marine creatures as accessories to a frieze of a battle of demi-gods on the surface of the waters. Hayward dates the design to c. 1545 when Hornick was still working in Antwerp. The frieze is particularly close to a silver-gilt covered-tazza, dated 1545, and owned by Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Although the date belongs to the early phase of Mannerism in the Low Countries, and strap-work as employed by Hornick was not yet in vogue, Hayward feels that Hornick may well have been ahead of his contemporaries in the appreciation of strap-work ornament.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Drawing, design of a ewer from a set of 276 drawings for silver and goldsmith's work by Erasmus Hornick and other Flemish, German and Italian artists who worked c.1582-3 at the court of Rudolph II in Prague, pen and ink and wash, 16th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Silke Reiter, <i>Erasmus Hornick : ein Goldschmied, Radierer und Zeichner des 16.
