There is strong evidence to suggest that Sir Francis Henry May, Governor of Hong Kong 1913-1919, bought it to the UK. It is an example of 'foreign religions iconography' that interested the Christian clergy in the late 19th and early 20th century.\r\n\r\nRepresentations of Daoist deities, shown in five rows, were popular with followers of the Daoist religion. At the very top are the ‘Three Purities’, while in the bottom row is the judgement of human beings.","physicalDescription":"A painting, watercolour and ink on paper, depicting five rows of Daoist deities.
