Volume II. 17th-18th century</u>, London, 1980, cat. 846, p. 98, illus.\r\n\r\nThe following is the full text of the entry:\r\n\n846\r\nDavid beheading Goliath\r\nInscribed in ink in a 17th century hand ‘Cavedon’ and again in a later hand ’93 JWH’ (similar to, but not exactly like, Lugt, <i>Supplement</i>, 1555<sup>c</sup>)\r\nPen and ink and brown wash over black chalk\r\n11 ¾ x 16 (299 x 406)\t               6887\r\nPROVENANCE Townshend Bequest 1868\r\n\r\nAccording to a note on the back of the mount, Bodmer believed the drawing to be a study for a painting by Cavedone in S. Salvatore, Bologna. But there appears to be no such picture. The drawing is too rough and summary for Cavedone, notwithstanding the old attribution.
