It includes the line at the end 'give the scraps and heads to the nearest cat'. Artist Tatyana Kozmina lives with her husband in the village of Staraya Ladoga on the west bank of the River Volkhov, close to the southern shores of Lake Lagoda in Russia in a small wooden house and her subject matter is inspired by village life. \r\n\r\nDuring the bleakest years of the Soviet regime many communities survived through extremely careful, ingenious and resourceful use of local materials, whether that be wild animals and plants or carefully tended kitchen gardens. Systems of exchange were commonplace at a time when commercial trade through shops and with hard cash was virtually impossible.","physicalDescription":"In the centre of the image an old man at a table eating a small fish with bread. There is a legend on the tablet above him, a legend below and on the arch around him and on the 'front' of the table. To his left: a scene of a young couple going fishing; another of a cloth with small fishes being shaken into a bowl.and a bowl of soup. To the right: [the same?] young couple fishing by the water, in the distance buildings on the shore of the lake. Lower right: a cat eating fish bones. Each inscription is numbered, Inscriptions 1&2 are in to tablet above the old man; 3, is the border arch around him; 4, to the left, below the fishing couple; 5, below the old man.
