He convinced the Government to use humour for wartime propaganda and offered his services free.  He believed the sharing of a joke enabled a poster to persuade without causing resentment by appearing to preach.  Fougasse designed a series of eight posters for the Careless Talk Cost Lives campaign. They were produced in a variety of formats both for indoor and outdoor display, and proved so popular that they were even reproduced on textiles.","physicalDescription":"Illustration of two ladies seen in profile having tea in a room with Hitler-printed wallpaper.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Fougasse","id":"A8020"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"colour lithography","id":"AAT190525"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Propaganda","id":"THES48902"},{"text":"Caricatures & Cartoons","id":"THES48983"},{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BB5463","2008BU0654"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MB2E","shelf":"LS","box":"3"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1940","earliest":"1940-01-01","latest":"1940-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"E.2167-1946","id":"O76701"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"Gift of the American Friends of the V&A; Gift to the American Friends by Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"32","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"21","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'Don't forget that / walls / have ears!'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Centre"},{"content":"'CARELESS TALK / COSTS LIVES'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Printed on two lines across the lower margin"},{"content":"'Fougasse'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"In upper left corner"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Walls have ears!', Second World War cartoon poster warning against careless talk, designed by Fougasse, United Kingdom, 1940","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Hitler, Adolf","id":"N1953"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[{"text":"World War II","id":"V16"}],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"tea","id":"AAT249828"},{"text":"women","id":"AAT25943"},{"text":"wallpaper","id":"x37614"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"politics","id":"AAT55537"},{"text":"propaganda","id":"AAT55539"},{"text":"secrecy","id":"AAT257050"},{"text":"security","id":"AAT226324"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.1558-2004"],"accessionNumberNum":"1558","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2004,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Leslie Schreyer Loan Number","id":"THES50220"},"number":"LS.1942"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-10-30","recordCreationDate":"2004-07-09","availableToBook":false}}
