Mortimer, 316, describes a volume published by Camocio in 1571 of antique foliage by Giovanni Battista Mutiano, which has bound into it five plates of leaf forms with grotesques signed by Camocio as publisher. Mortimer illustrates one of these five plates, which shows strong stylistic similarities to the plate here. The print here also shares a number of features: the muscularity of the male torso top left, the winged insect top right, and the character of the scrolling foliage, with a print catalogued by Bartsch as School of Raimindi (B. XV, p.57, no. 5; TIB, vol. 28, p. 76). According to Mortimer, Caomocio was also a map publisher active 1557-69, about whom nothing is known after 1572.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Ornamental figure with hound and grotesque figures; Possibly by Giovanni Antonio da Brescia; engraving; Italian 1571","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Hind, A.M., Early Italian Engraving, 7 vols, London, 1938-48, vol. 5, no. 56."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Berlin, Katalog der Ornamentstich-Sammlung der Staatlichen Kunstbibliothek Berlin, Berlin and Leipzig, 1939, 539."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Mortimer, R., Harvard College Library, Department of Printing and Graphic Arts, Catalogue of Books and Manuscripts: Part II Italian 16th Century Books, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1974, 316."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Bartsch, A., The Illustrated Bartsch, University Park, Pennsylvania and New York, 1971-, 2511.055."},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Miller, E., 16th-century Italian ornament prints in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1999, p. 52 (cat. 8)."}],"production":"Reissue of Hind V, no. 56, TIB 2511.055","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"hound","id":"x36479"},{"text":"grotesque","id":"AAT10211"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["28795J"],"accessionNumberNum":"28795","accessionNumberPrefix":"","accessionYear":null,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-05","recordCreationDate":"2004-07-06","availableToBook":false}}
