Usually square, it was often worn tied underneath the chin.\r\n\r\nFirms began to capitalise on the advertising potential of the scarf in the late 1940s. The name of a product or title of a film printed onto this prominently worn garment ensured free publicity. This example features brand names and attractions which are still well-known such as Haig's Scotch Whisky and Butlin's. The eye-catching colours and American-influenced imagery represent the increased prosperity of a society which had recovered from the deprivations of war and now manufactured a vast range of consumer goods.","physicalDescription":"Silk square head scarf printed with advertising slogans and brand names such as Haig's Scotch Whisky and Butlin's in bright colours on a white ground.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printed","id":"AAT53319"},{"text":"twill weave","id":"x37297"},{"text":"woven","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed silk\r\n\r\nTwill weave","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Hats and headwear","id":"THES48943"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006AB7001","2010EF6821","2006AB7000","2019LM9330"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"008","id":"THES307825"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Head scarf","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1950-1960","earliest":"1950-01-01","latest":"1960-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mrs Greta Edwards","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"34","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"34","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Head scarf of twill weave silk with screen printing, designed for C.J.
