Its initial purpose was the patrolling of black ghettos to protect residents from police brutality. The carrying of guns was integral to this policy of self-defence and symbolic of it. The Party also urged the black community to be self-reliant and advocated the teaching of Black History. Emory Douglas (the Panther's Minister for Culture) fuses these principles in this poster. The revolutionary student wears non-American dress and carries a Black Studies book along with the trademark firearm.","physicalDescription":"Illustration of a woman carrying a baby, armed with a gun over her shoulder and an armed man, gun in hand, carrying a Black Studies textbook.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Douglas, Emory","id":"A13081"},"association":{"text":"illustrator","id":"x36173"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Black Panther Party","id":"A13101"},"association":{"text":"publishers","id":"AAT25574"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"offset lithography","id":"AAT192900"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Offset lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Propaganda","id":"THES48902"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Global Africa","id":"THES413895"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BB5473"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"Y","shelf":"61","box":"E"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1970","earliest":"1970-01-01","latest":"1970-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of the American Friends of the V&A; Gift to the American Friends by Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"58.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"44.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Revolutionary Student","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Emory Douglas, Poster produced by the Black Panther Party, USA, 1970","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"'Prop Art: over 1000 contemporary political posters' by Gary Yanker.
