He stood on an anti-Vietnam War ticket. The poster very simply shows the Stars and Stripes being assembled  and makes use of the flag's status as an embodiment of the nation and the visualised fulfilment of the 'American dream'.\r\n\r\nMcGovern's political efforts during the 1960s mainly centred on eliminating hunger in America. He served as the director of President Kennedy's Food for Peace programme. He was also openly critical of President Lyndon Johnson's deployment of US troops in Vietnam. His views made him a popular candidate with progressive students of voting age, however he only received 38% of the popular vote.
