Newton (1942-1989) was a co-founder of the Black Panther party and its Minister for Self-Defence. He was jailed for manslaughter after a shoot-out between Panthers and the police in 1967. The 'Free Huey' campaign called for his release.  Posters were among the techniques used to turn the campaign into a rallying cry for the party, helping it to expand its membership and influence across America. The posters featuring seemingly vulnerable black children, such as this one, were particularly effective at toning down the militant aspects of the organisation which some people, particularly white Americans, found intimidating. It is interesting to note, however, that the militant aspects remained: the little boy carries a shotgun slung over his shoulder.","physicalDescription":"Cartoon-style image of a tearful black child in torn trousers.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Douglas, Emory","id":"A13081"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[{"text":"colour offset lithograph","id":"x35425"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour offset lithograph","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"},{"text":"Propaganda","id":"THES48902"},{"text":"Black History","id":"THES48989"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Global Africa","id":"THES413895"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2015HJ5223","2006BB5402"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"Y","shelf":"66","box":"E"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"poster","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1970","earliest":"1970-01-01","latest":"1970-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Gift of the American Friends of the V&A; Gift to the American Friends by Leslie, Judith and Gabri Schreyer and Alice Schreyer Batko","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"57","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"38.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Poster produced by the Black Panther Party during the \"Free Huey\" campaign, 1970","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Newton, Huey P.","id":"N4045"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"child","id":"x31382"}],"contentConcepts":[{"text":"propaganda","id":"AAT55539"},{"text":"freedom","id":"AAT55497"},{"text":"justice","id":"x35251"}],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.300-2004"],"accessionNumberNum":"300","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2004,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"Leslie Schreyer Loan Number","id":"THES50220"},"number":"LS.1047"}],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-08","recordCreationDate":"2004-07-02","availableToBook":false}}
